Russell Jewell Ed.D, NWS


Russell Jewell is an artist/educator from Easley, South Carolina. For more than twenty-five years, he has carved a career out of the combining forces of art and education. Jewell's qualifications for such a career include a Masters of Art from the University of South Carolina and a Doctorate of Education in Art from the University of Georgia. He is a certified Advanced Placement teacher and has received certification by the National Board for Professional Teachers.

Dr. Jewell's educational awards include: Easley High School Teacher of the Year, Pickens County Teacher of the Year, Greenville's Golden Apple Award and a Fulbright Memorial Fund Scholarship to Japan . His local art awards include: Winner of the River Place Plein Air Competition and the Claude Smith Exhibition's People's Choice Award. Jewell received South Carolina Watercolor Society Awards in 2004 and 2005. He has received awards in many national and international art competitions including the Savoir Faire Merchandise Award with the National Watercolor Society (2001), as well as, Signature Membership into the National Watercolor Society (2003). Jewell was published in both Splash 8 and Splash 9: The Best of Watercolor, North Light Publications 2004, 2006 and was again chosen for Splash 10 to be published in 2008. Publications of Jewell's work also include The Artist Magazine (Jan. 2005).

Russell Jewell is a signature member of the S.C. Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Much of Jewell's work reflects his travel experiences shared with his family, students and fellow colleagues to such places as Amsterdam, Belgium, England, Italy, France, Costa Rica, Japan, and Canada. Some of Jewell's favorite subject matter includes his wife Melissa and children, Nicholas and Anna Mackenzie. Most recently Jewell has enjoyed success as an East Coast plein air painter. Plein Air Painting is a term that refers to painting outdoors on location. Jewell has won awards in 2005, 2006 and 2007 at the premiere Plein Air Competition in Easton, Maryland.
  Jewell was chosen to compete in Colorado's Telluride Plein Air Competition June 29 - July5 2008.
